Strike Alert: Mortuary workers declare nationwide strike from Thursday October 1st

Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has announced to the general public that its members will embark on a nationwide strike from Thursday, October 1 over their long-standing unresolved grievances over poor condition of service of their members.

MOWAG noted that its employer, the Ministry of Health (MOH), has failed to resolve members’ grievances over poor condition of service and only pretends  to make moves to resolve the grievances.

In a press release signed by the Association’s General Secretary, Richard Kofi Jordan, the members noted that they “had to work in intolerable conditions including the constant inhalation of dangerous and cancer-causing chemicals formaldehyde”.

“MOH was supposed to have effected certain simple changes in the working conditions of the members of MOWAG but did not and have not, to date.

“Having become tired of its inactions and being aware that the Government appears to be nowhere near taking a serious look at the grievances of the MOWAG, pursuant to resolving same problems, the MOWAG, under the Article 159 of the Labour Law (Act 651) has now initiated the industrial strike action till its demands are met.”

“Ghana Government, do your part NOW and MOWAG will rescind its decision-Formalin dey kill us waii,” the statement added.

MOWAG entreated all mortuary workers in public health institutions – Ghana Health Service, CHAG, Teaching Hospitals, and University Hospitals  to lay down their tools as agreed on October 1 until further notice.
