Deputy GNAT General Secretary Kneels And Begs Teachers Not To Run Away From Bawku || Read Details

Deputy GNAT general secretary, Dagbandow Kwame, goes on his knees to plead with teachers who are fleeing Bawku because of the conflict to return.

It must be noted that, not less than 100 teachers had already run from Bawku for their lives due to unending conflict in the area.

Report gathered by Honestynewgh has uncovered that the Municipal Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has granted the release of about 100 basic school teachers in the Bawku Municipality in the Upper East Region due to the volatile security situation in the area.

Bawku over decades, has become a hotbed of old ethnic conflict between Kusassi and Mamprusis. The fight which has claimed many lives over the years was ignited during Christmas, leading to the death of three people including a police female constable.

According to the municipal director of the Ghana Education Service (GES),  Ayeriga Azeriya, teachers besiege the offices of the GES each day to demand to be re-posted to schools they will  feel safe and secure in.

He said “there is no way they can be prevented since they require a safer and conducive working environment to work”.

“For now, not less than 100 teachers have been released to other districts to teach which has created a huge teacher deficit in the municipality with its negative consequences on teaching and learning,” he said.

Schools in Bawku Municipal areas according to the municipal director had started recording low turnout of both pupils and teachers.

Pertaining to that situation, the Deputy General Secretary of GNAT during a meeting with teachers knelt down and pleaded with teachers who are fleeing Bawku to return.
