PRINCOF in Support of Colleges of Education Entrance Exams

The Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF) has endorsed the decision by the National Teaching Council (NTC) to conduct entrance exams for prospective colleges of education applicants in the yet to be implemented new reforms.

The NTC during the February 2022 stakeholders engagement revealed that the newly yet to be implemented reforms will seek to introduce a selection of test at the point of admission into the various Public Colleges of Education to help admit applicants who are fit to be trained as teachers.

Mr Emmanuel Nyamekye, the President of PRINCOF reiterated that fresh students seeking to pursue teacher education in various public teacher training institutions will be tested on numeracy and literacy.

“The entrance exams will ensure we have people who are committed and can go through the training programme successful. It should not be looked at as new thing, it is something we used to do in the “90s”, he emphasised.

“We are seeking for teachers with qualities and not the quantity we produce each year in the name of ‘we need more teachers’. I acknowledge the fact that we need more teachers but they should be those who can teach after their training”, he added.

At the meeting last week, the Chairman of the Council, Anis Haffar emphatically publicized that  whether Ghana moves forward or backwards depends on the training that we give to our teachers hence the need to improve our teacher education.
