“No Cost of Living Allowance Paid This Month, Declare Strike Now” – Validators & Teachers Tell Union Leaders

Validators and Teachers are calling on the Union Leaders to declare strike due to non- payment of the cost of living allowance this month.

Teachers in Ghana are one step away from laying down their tools as a sign of registering their displeasure to the Government and other various stakeholders over non payment of their (COLA).

The three major teacher unions (The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and Coalition of Concern Teachers Ghana (CCTGH ) earlier this month issued threats of embarking on indefinite strikes should government fail to pay the COLA to teachers by the end of 30th June 2022.

Salary Payment Voucher for June, 2022 is ready for validation at www.gogspv.com for all validators to validate their Payment Voucher.

However, honestynewsgh.com upon further checks has confirmed that the COLA for teachers DID NOT reflect on the Payment Voucher.

Teachers upon hearing that the COLA did not reflect this month have begun asking questions on the next line of action their leaders are going to administer.

However, the Honourable Minister of Finance, Mr. Ken Offori Atta has recently disclosed that the fiscal deficit of the country is going to widen as the government takes plans to pay teachers cost of living allowance, COLA.

In a newspaper covered by Economy Times on Tuesday, 14th June 2022, the minister stated that the government has strengthened the Fair wages and salaries commission to engage stakeholders in meeting to determine the COLA for teachers’.

According to the teacher unions, the current economic hardship is worsening the status of Teachers and has made teachers take home pay useless.

The unions are demanding this COLA to help cushion teachers in this daily increase in prices of goods and services.

Some Reactions from Teachers

According to some angry teachers who spoke to Honestynewsgh in an exclusive interview, the teachers lamented that ;

“Our union leaders on many occasions have disappointed us when it comes to negotiations and the required actions to take on certain issues. We are going to embark on series of demonstrations to register our grievances”.

“If the government pretend to pay teachers well, teachers will also pretend to be teaching and that will be dangerous for the country. A teacher with financial issues will not get the right frame of mind to teach, they will be stressed up, it will affects their output of work which will directly affect students academic performance”, one female teacher said.

“Our classrooms will soon experience teacher absenteeism, we [teachers] will have divided attention to our profession and other side jobs in order to help us combat this economic hardship”, one angry teacher blurted.
