SHS New Curriculum – SHS Subjects Reduced from 63 to 37

The Ministry of Education (MoE) in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the National Council of Curriculum Development (NaCCA) have finally announced a significant reduction in the number of Senior High Schools subjects.

The management of MoE and NaCCA upon the release of the newly designed curriculum, have reduced the number of subjects offered by students in SHSs from 63 to 37.

According to the NaCCA, the significant change forms part of the newly proposed SHS Curriculum that has been made ready to commence in the upcoming academic year (2024/2025).

The newly designed curriculum have categorised the SHS subjects under Core Subjects,  Elective Subjects and Special Elective Subjects.

Core Subjects 

• English Language
• Mathematics
• Additional Mathematics
• General Science
• Social Studies
• Agricultural Science
• Arts and Design Foundation

Elective Subjects

• Biology
• Chemistry
• Physics
• Computing
• Agriculture
• Physical Education & Health
• Home Economics
• History
• Economics
• Geography
• Government
• Art and Design Studio
• Performing Arts
• Applied Technology
• Business
• Religious Studies
• Literature-in-English
• ICT
• Ghanaian Language
• French
• Arabic
• Spanish

Specialized Elective Subjects

• Biomedical Science
• Manufacturing Engineering
• Robotics
• Aviation and Aerospace Engineering
• Engineering Science + Robotics

NOTE

1. Languages and Specialized Elective Subjects will be offered in schools based on the availability of qualified teachers.

2. Pure science students will not learn Integrated Science (General Science) as a core subject.

Curriculum Objectives

The new curriculum according to NaCCA aims to enhance critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills among students. It focuses on equipping learners with the necessary knowledge and skills to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Implementation Strategies

The implementation plans for the new curriculum, including teacher training,
resource allocation, and monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to ensure successful adoption and sustained impact.
