Senior staff of universities embark on strike over non-payment of Tier 2 pension arrears and others

The leadership of the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana commenced its intended strike yesterday, May 18th 2021.

The strike is to protest the non-payment of Tier 2 pension arrears of members, failure of government to finalize negotiations on conditions of services, and the non-payment of non basic allowance and  market premiums to members.

The strike, which was initially scheduled for February 2021, was suspended after the National Labour Commission secured an interlocutory injunction from the High Court, Labour Division, against the association.

Speaking to Kaakyire Ofori Ayim on Atinka FM’s AM Drive, monitored by Honestynewsgh, Chairman for the Senior Staff Association of the various universities in Ghana,  Zakaria Mohammed noted that the Tier 2 pension arrears of its members from 2010 to 2016 has not being paid.

According to Zakaria Mohammed,  the decision to strike follows the government’s failure to address the concerns of its members despite calls on government since February 2021.

He reiterated that members of the association will lay down their tools today and ensure, no skeletal staff are brought in to work while they strike.

Zakaria Mohammed says the association will continue to strike until government is ready to renegotiate with the association.

“The strike started yesterday 18th of May 2021. The government has not yielded to the directives of the Labour Commission. This one is going to be an aggravated strike because the last time we went on strike, retired staff were put in the principal offices. This time around, we are going to make sure that no skeletal staff is going to be put in principal offices. We are in trying times and the cost of living has gone up and since government is not listening to us, wee need to strike, ” he added.
