Salary controversy: Gov’t threatened not to employ graduates from colleges of education if we don’t accept the 4% increment- GNAT

The sad news for workers which broke out after the final negotiation on Thursday June 1, 2021 resulted in Organized Labour of which the mother teacher union form part cheaply succumbing to government’s 4% and 7% pay rise for 2021 and 2022 respectively.

This issue has become a talking point for the past weeks now. “Our labour unions have brutally lost the negotiations battle and this is a clear indication that this is the weakest labour union of our time”, public workers fires.

But according to the GNAT executive in charge of conditions of service, Mr. Nii Baah in an interview with Mr Baah on UTV late news at 10pm, the government said that the government wage bill will be increased by GH¢ 300M every month if it increase the salary by more than 4%. He again specify that this will bring about unemployment in the country if the percentage was more than 4%.

The government made it emphatically clear that it will not employ college of education graduates for this year and beyond if we did not accept the 4% increment.

“At the beginning of negotiations,  we proposed a 15% increase in base pay for 2021 which was shot down to a nose diving 4% counter proposal by government and we have to accept it because of the aforementioned conditions by the government” he added.
