Ghanaian Teachers Agitate Over Unlawful Deductions From Thier Professional Allowance

Ghanaian teachers in the public sector are fuming with range over unlawful controversial deductions being made by the Controller and Accountants General’s Department in the month of November in relation to the pending salary.

Teachers were excited to receive their  Professional  Development Allowance  in full this month regardless of all the brouhaha surrounding a deduction of an amount of Ghc509.55 as 30% payment for the one teacher one laptop project.

But unfortunately this month salary has seen unlawful controversial deductions which   include, Ghc100 National Teaching Council (NTC) deductions for Teacher License as well as Ghc509.55 Teacher Laptop deductions.

This has led to about 200.00ghc increase in the tax being paid by the teachers. And all the deductions put together amount to 1,194.63ghc

According to the teachers, they do not owe NTC a dine and are not obliged to pay any tax on the allowance too.

It would be recalled that the GES met with the leaders of the various teacher unions to negotiate on the rate to be paid to members of the associations as allowance.  The amount agreed upon was Ghc1,200 for professionals and Ghc800.00 for non- professionals.

It was also agreed that the allowance was not subject to tax but this month’s have revealed that the allowance has been taxed contrary to the agreement reached.

In this regards, Ghanaian teachers wish to bring to the attention of the management of GES and the leaders of the Teacher Unions to take immediate steps to liaise with the Finance Ministry and the CAGD to effect the correction as soon as possible else they will laid down their tools to register their displeasure.
