President of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana, CETAG, Obeng Himah is calling on government to replace trainees allowance with students Loan.
According to Mr Obeng Himah the government should initiate broader consultation on challenges facing members of the Association.
According to him, previous interventions have not yielded many results.
Speaking to GBC News, Mr. Obeng-Himah said “it is time for the government to consider allowing students of colleges of education to apply for student loans or find other avenues to source funds”.
Could it be a call for the cancellation of the allowances been given to college students by the government? Time will definitely tell.
Scores of Proposals to Government Pertaining To The Allowance Cancellation
Some stakeholders in education; African Education Watch and policy think tank, IMANI have all suggested that government should abolish the allowance.
The African Education Watch has described it as wasteful and needless, thus, asking the Education Ministry to redirect funds allocated for the allowance to recruiting more teachers to address the teacher deficit in the country.
Also, IMANI Ghana thinks the Ministry of Education and government should consider scrapping the teacher trainee allowance and channel the funds into improving the working conditions of teachers in rural areas.
The President of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana, Jonathan Dzunu, in his one of his previous argument on the allowance cancellation, argued that the allowance, if canceled, will pose a great challenge to students, especially for those who cannot fend for themselves.
Now the question is, will the president of the Association raise this kind of argument after the successful launch of the “No Guarantor Students Loan Policy” for students?
It this the perfect time for the cancellation of the allowances? Drop you comments because something is really cooking.
